Cigarette

I’m sitting in the back, smoking a cigarette
Thinking of love and how to forget
Having the damnst time of keeping it lit
Cause it’s raining tonight and I’m getting all wet
Seeing the stars and passing of time
Wondering why happiness can never be mine
And I ask you dear Lord to show me a sign
Going day by day and line after line
Passion will grow from the roots of the Earth
And I’m reaping all that I do deserve
When it’s all straight they throw me a curve
Why is it Lord that I never do learn
So the question of why is all that I get
Seeing the stars pass as I sit
Thinking of love and how to forget
Just sitting out back smoking a cigarette

  1. i like this, i think the simple language and structure contributes to the familiarity of this for me and just the what the hell is wrong with all of this and generally despondent feelings everyone has sometimes.

and for some reason, it makes me smile when you say you’re having the “damnst time” of trying to keep your cigarette lit.

  2. I know very few smokers any more. So many people I have met quit because they never truly liked it.

But the few that I know that do smoke probably would love this poem. You can tell that w/ every drag they seriously love every bit of it. I do sorta miss restaurants having the smoking section and all.

  3. My ex roomate is a heavy smoker and she’s in the middle of getting over a love affair ; this poem sounds like it resembles what goes on in her head quite accurately. Except for the “dear lord” part, as she is an Athiest, haha. But, anyhow, a lovely little poem.

    The line:

“Passion will grow from the roots of the Earth
And I’m reaping all that I do deserve”

makes me think you’re smoking a little more than just cigarettes, but maybe I’m just jumping to conclusions. :)

  4. You know you have a good poem when it strikes a familiar chord in it’s readers.

I smoked many, many years ago and used to sit there and think about stuff like that.

The solution. I gave up smoking and started thinking about others.

    Nice work, blueeyedmanchild.
